One of my clients is a lady in her 70s. I would call her Jane. She comes once a week to get her feeling back in her feet, so I do moxibustion and needles to treat her. The moxibustion is a Japanese method of healing that uses herbs. Mugwort is used in a compounded form to warm up the top of the skin. In her case, in a webbing among her toes. It is done about ½ inch above the skin. It is a slow and gentle method of nourishing our bones, muscles, and skin back to being.
As with all of my clients, I checked with her at the beginning of the session. She was pale, the corners of her mouth drooping down, and she looked away. Her posture tilted forward, and her shoulders sloped down.
When I asked her how she was doing, she replied,
"Today is 35 years since my mother died, and I will never get over it." she quietly broke down in tears.
There was silence in the treatment room. I looked at her and asked, "What do I know about your mother through you?"
She slowly repeated my questions, looking back at me surprisingly.
"What are the gifts that you carry in life through your mother? "
After that, there were 3 of us in the treatment room.
Jane went to the top of the treatment table. I started my treatment, and she continued telling me about all the beautiful qualities her mother had. She described her as funny, creative, artistic, and joyful. She also told me how people in the neighborhood and family loved her.
I listened and added some upper kidney points to her treatment plan. These are unique points in Chinese medicine that are indicated in grief and loss. They are located on the chest, right around the breast bone, like a little ladder carrying in its name a story and the potential to overcome one's heartache.
